What is service area business?

A service area business is one that travels to customers rather than serving them at a storefront, and Google lets it hide its address on its Business Profile while listing the areas it covers.

Plumbers, roofers, mobile notaries, HVAC companies and in home therapists all fit. When you set up the profile as a service area business you provide your real address for verification but keep it hidden from the public, then define coverage by cities, regions or postal codes. Google asks that the areas reflect where you genuinely serve and suggests keeping the total within a reasonable driving distance. Businesses that serve customers both at a location and on site can show the address and still list service areas, which is the right setting for a shop with a van fleet.

The common mistake is drawing coverage far too wide in the hope of appearing everywhere. It does not work that way, because distance from the searcher still shapes local results, and an enormous service area just makes your relevance vaguer. List the areas you will actually drive to and back up the important ones with real location pages on your site. The other serious mistake is using a home address publicly or renting a mailbox to fake a presence, which violates Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
