What is citation?

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website, such as a directory listing, chamber page or trade association profile, whether or not it links to you.

Citations help search engines verify that your business exists where you say it does and is what you say it is. Structured citations are listings in directories with set fields. Unstructured citations are plain mentions in articles, blog posts or local news. Quality beats quantity. Listings on the data aggregators, the major directories, your trade bodies and locally relevant sites are worth building. Mass submissions to hundreds of low grade directories are not, and they create a cleanup problem later when details change. Accuracy is the whole point, so a wrong citation is worse than none.

A practical build for a service business is short. Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, the Better Business Bureau if you participate, your local chamber, and the two or three directories your trade actually uses, such as a licensing board listing or a manufacturer dealer locator. Get those exactly right, keep a record of logins, and update them together whenever something changes. That list does more than a thousand automated submissions, and you can maintain it yourself.
