A plain language model answers from patterns learned during training, which means it can be out of date and can state things confidently that are wrong. RAG adds a retrieval step. The system converts the question into a search, pulls back the most relevant chunks of text from an index or the live web, and hands those chunks to the model as context for writing the answer. That is why AI search tools can cite sources and discuss recent events. It is the architecture behind most AI search products and behind internal assistants built on a company's own documents.
Two things follow for your website. First, your content has to be retrievable, which means crawlable pages, real text rather than text baked into images, and sections that make sense pulled out on their own. Second, chunk level clarity beats clever writing. If a paragraph about your emergency service only makes sense after reading the three above it, it is weak retrieval material. A clinic page that states hours, insurance accepted and location in self contained sentences will get used. The same facts scattered across a long narrative often will not.
