Google began rolling AI Overviews out widely in the United States in 2024 after testing the format as the Search Generative Experience. The panel sits above the traditional results, answers the query in a few sentences, and cites a handful of pages it drew from. Google decides when to show one, and coverage varies a lot by query type. Informational and how to questions trigger them often. Transactional and local queries trigger them less, and Google has adjusted when they appear more than once. Being cited depends on being crawlable, relevant and clearly on topic, not on any paid placement.
The effect on a service business cuts both ways. Broad research queries you used to win with a blog post may now get answered on the page, so fewer people click. At the same time, a citation in the panel puts your name in front of someone at the exact moment they are deciding. The move is to stop chasing pure traffic on generic questions and build pages that answer a question plainly and then give a reason to call, such as an HVAC page that explains why a system short cycles and ends with your service area and number.
Send the site over. We will tell you what is broken, what you could rank for, and whether AI search knows you exist. No charge and no pitch deck.
