Google has described this behavior as part of how AI Mode works. Instead of matching your typed query against an index once, the system breaks the question into subtopics and issues multiple queries at the same time, including ones you never typed. A question like best way to fix a leaking flat roof might fan out into causes of flat roof leaks, repair versus replacement cost, and local roofing contractors. The model then pulls from the results of all of those and writes one response. The term is fairly new and mostly comes from Google's own explanations of the feature.
The practical lesson is that you cannot optimize for a single phrase anymore. You need coverage across the whole cluster of questions that surround a job. A roofing company that only has one page called roof repair will lose to one that also covers leak causes, repair versus replacement, insurance claims and what a flat roof costs in its market. Each of those pages can get picked up by a different branch of the fan-out. Build topic coverage, keep the facts consistent between pages, and link them together so the whole set reads as one authority.
