What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of getting your business named and cited inside AI generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity.

GEO is optimization aimed at systems that write an answer instead of listing ten blue links. Most of the groundwork is the same as SEO: crawlable pages, clean structure, accurate facts and real authority. What changes is the target. You write passages that are easy to lift and quote, you keep your details consistent across your site and the wider web, and you earn mentions on the third party pages these models pull from. The label is new and still argued over. Some practitioners treat GEO as its own discipline, others call it SEO pointed at a different surface.

This matters because a homeowner asking an assistant who to call for hail damage in Boerne may never see a results page at all. If the model names three roofers, being one of those three is the whole job. A company like RoadRunner Roofing gets there the same way it ranks in Google: specific service pages, a filled out Google Business Profile, matching phone and address everywhere, and coverage in local sources. Write every page as though a model will quote one sentence of it back to a stranger, and put the answer in that first sentence.
