What is review velocity?

Review velocity is the rate at which your business earns new reviews over time, and a steady ongoing flow generally looks more credible than a sudden burst followed by silence.

Review count and average rating are the obvious numbers, but recency and consistency carry weight too, both with search engines assessing prominence and with customers reading your profile. Twenty reviews spread over the last year reads very differently from twenty posted in one week two years ago. Sudden spikes can also trip spam filters, and reviews that get filtered may disappear from your profile entirely. Google prohibits incentivized reviews and review gating, meaning you cannot offer something in exchange or screen customers to send only happy ones to your profile.

The way to build velocity is to make asking part of the job rather than a campaign. Hand the technician a short link or QR code to request a review when the work is signed off, since that is the moment the customer is most pleased. Ask every customer, not just the ones you expect to be positive. Respond to all reviews, including the bad ones, because the response is read by future customers more than the complaint is. An HVAC company that collects a few reviews every week will pass a competitor sitting on an old pile within months.
