Search engines find pages mainly by following links, so a page with no internal links pointing at it depends on a sitemap entry or an external link to be found at all. Even when discovered, it receives no internal authority and tends to underperform. Orphans accumulate naturally: a landing page built for a campaign that ended, a page left behind after a navigation redesign, posts published outside the normal template, or pages created by an import. You find them by comparing a crawl of your site against your sitemap and your analytics or Search Console URL list.
The decision for each one is simple: link it or lose it. If the page is useful, add links to it from relevant pages using descriptive anchor text and put it back in the navigation or a hub page. If it is obsolete, remove it and 301 redirect to the closest live equivalent. Service businesses commonly discover old seasonal promotion pages and duplicate city pages sitting orphaned for years, still indexed, still occasionally pulling in a visitor who lands on an offer that expired two winters ago.
