The file lists each URL and can include the date it was last modified. It is a discovery aid, not a ranking tool, and including a URL does not guarantee indexing. A sitemap should only contain canonical, indexable pages that return a 200 status. Including redirected URLs, 404s, noindexed pages or non canonical duplicates sends mixed signals and makes the file less trustworthy. Large sites split sitemaps by type and reference them from an index file. Most content management systems generate and update this automatically, which is the right approach since a stale sitemap is worse than none.
For a fifty page contractor site, sitemaps matter less than good internal linking, but they are quick to get right and they make the page indexing report in Search Console far more useful by giving Google a clear statement of what you consider a real page. Submit it once, confirm it is being read, and then check occasionally that your plugin has not started including author archives, tag pages or attachment URLs that you never wanted indexed in the first place.
