When ChatGPT answers a local question it searches first. The pages it tends to land on are your own site, Google and Apple map listings, Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack and trade directories, chamber and association pages, Reddit threads, and local news coverage. It stitches those together into a few sentences. Anything that only exists inside a PDF, a photo, a video with no transcript, or behind a login is effectively invisible to it, no matter how good that content is.
The model also carries training knowledge with a cutoff date, which is where a lot of bad information comes from. If you moved, changed your phone number, or dropped a service, an old page or an old memory can keep circulating for a long time. The fix is unglamorous. Update your site, update your Google Business Profile, and get stale directory entries corrected so the current version outnumbers the old one wherever the model looks.
The practical takeaway for an owner is to put the facts in crawlable text on your own site: service areas, hours, services, brands you work with, and how to reach you. Keep your map profile current, because it feeds these answers both directly and through the pages that copy it. Then claim and correct the five or six directories that actually show up when you search your own category and city.
