Schema is structured data in your page code that labels your information for machines. LocalBusiness and the trade specific types cover your name, address, phone, hours, service area and price range. Service describes what you sell. FAQPage marks a question and its answer as a pair. Review and AggregateRating cover ratings where you are permitted to use them. Product, Event and Article handle the other common cases on a small business site.
For AI systems the benefit is disambiguation. A model reading loose HTML has to infer that the phone number near the footer belongs to the business named in a logo image. Schema removes that guessing. It lowers the chance of a tool stating something wrong about you, and it raises the chance the tool is willing to state anything at all, since confident claims need sources the machine can parse without hedging.
Keep it honest and keep it simple. Mark up only what is actually on the page, never fabricate ratings, and validate your work with Google's rich results test and the schema validator. Schema is also no substitute for written content. If the page does not answer the question in plain words, perfect markup will not get you quoted. Do both, in this order: content first, then markup on top of it.
