Every meaningful image should carry a short, specific description of what it shows. Decorative images that add nothing should have an empty alt attribute so screen readers skip them rather than announce a filename. Good alt text is plain and literal: hail damaged asphalt shingles on a residential roof in Boerne beats roofing services Boerne TX roof repair. Keyword stuffing alt attributes is an old tactic that helps nothing and makes the page worse for the people the attribute exists to serve. Accessibility is the primary purpose and search understanding is the side benefit.
There is a real commercial reason to do this beyond compliance. Service businesses live on before and after photos, and described images can surface in image search where people genuinely browse for work like yours. Describe your own job photos accurately, use real filenames instead of IMG_4417, and the whole gallery becomes findable. It also matters for retrieval by AI systems, which cannot see inside your images: if a key fact about your work only exists in a picture, nothing can quote it.
