Track the path from search to signed client: calls, form fills and chats, then how many became consults, then how many retained. Rankings and traffic are early signals, but the real test is whether consults from search and AI tools are rising month over month.
Start with the numbers that sit closest to revenue. How many phone calls, contact forms and chat inquiries came in this month, and from where? Call tracking on the website and a separate tracked number on your Google Business Profile let you separate search calls from referrals and repeat clients. Then follow those inquiries through intake. How many were the right practice area and location, how many booked a consult, and how many retained? That chain tells you more than any ranking report.
Earlier signals still matter, as long as you read them in context. Business Profile views, direction requests and calls show whether your map presence is growing. Search Console shows which practice area pages are gaining impressions. Asking ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your clients ask, once a month, shows whether your firm is being named. If those climb while consults stay flat, the problem is usually intake, the website's call to action, or the type of inquiry, not visibility. Fixing those is usually cheaper than buying more traffic.
Give it a fair window. Most firms see profile and inquiry numbers move within a few months, with consult volume following as pages mature. Ask your intake team to log how each new client found you, because many people search your name after hearing about you somewhere else. If your agency cannot show you calls, forms and consults on one simple page each month, ask for it. That is the standard we hold ourselves to. It keeps budget decisions grounded in consults instead of guesswork or vanity metrics.
