How to read your website ROI

A website is not a brochure. For most service businesses it is the place every other channel sends people: Google searches, ads, social media, AI assistants and even word of mouth referrals who want to check you out first. This calculator follows that path from a visitor to a lead to a paying customer, so you can see what the site is actually worth in dollars.

The math is simple. Visitors times conversion rate gives you leads. Leads times close rate gives you customers. Customers times job value gives you revenue. We then apply your gross margin so the payback is based on profit you keep, not top line revenue, which gives a more honest answer.

Where to find your numbers

  • Visitors: Google Analytics, or the stats panel in Wix, Squarespace or WordPress. Use monthly users, not page views.
  • Conversion rate: calls from the site plus form fills plus online bookings, divided by visitors. Many local service sites land somewhere around 1–5%, depending on the offer, the design and how easy it is to call. If you are not tracking calls from your site, this is the first thing to fix.
  • Close rate and job value: the same numbers you would use in our lead value calculator.
  • Gross margin: what you keep from a typical job after materials and direct labor.

The two levers that matter most

Traffic comes from showing up where people search: Google, the Map Pack, Bing, and increasingly AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. That is ongoing work, which is why our plan includes monthly SEO, AI search optimization, new content and Google Business Profile updates every month.

Conversion rate comes from the site itself: loading fast on a phone, making it obvious what you do and where, showing real photos and reviews, and putting a click-to-call button where thumbs can find it. Try changing the conversion rate from 2% to 4% in the calculator. Doubling it doubles your leads without a single extra visitor.

How the comparison works

The comparison uses our small business website offer: a $750 flat build, then $399/month for unlimited updates, fresh content added monthly, monthly SEO, AI search optimization and Google Business Profile updates. The payback period shows how many months it takes for the profit from website customers, after the monthly plan, to cover the build cost.

One honest caveat: the calculator uses the traffic and conversion rate you enter. If your current site already brings in leads, the real gain from a new one is the improvement over what you have now. Try entering your current numbers, then a modest improvement, and compare the two. You can read the full details of what is included on our small business websites page.

If the numbers come up short

If the result says "Not yet," it usually means traffic is very low, the conversion rate is low, or both. That is useful to know. It means the priority is getting found and making it easy to contact you, not adding more pages. Our team can look at your current site and tell you which of the two is holding you back.

Common Questions

How do I calculate my website's ROI?

Multiply monthly visitors by your conversion rate to get leads, multiply leads by your close rate to get customers, and multiply customers by your average job value to get revenue. Apply your gross margin to get profit, then compare that to what the website costs.

What is a good website conversion rate for a local business?

Many local service business websites convert somewhere around 1–5% of visitors into calls, forms or bookings. Fast mobile load times, clear service and location pages, real photos, reviews and a visible click-to-call button all push that number up.

How much does a Heights Digital website cost?

Our small business websites are $750 flat to build, then $399/month. The monthly plan includes unlimited updates, monthly content, monthly SEO, AI search optimization and Google Business Profile updates.

Why does the calculator use gross margin?

Because revenue is not what you keep. A job that brings in $1,000 might leave $500 after materials and labor. Basing payback on gross profit gives a more honest picture of when the website has truly paid for itself.
