In Google Ads you often pay less than your maximum bid, because Ad Rank combines bid with quality signals and expected impact. Prices vary enormously by industry and location, driven by how much a customer is worth and how many advertisers want the same search. Legal, insurance and emergency home services sit among the most expensive categories anywhere in advertising. CPC on its own is a cost metric, not a performance metric, so it should always be read next to conversion rate and cost per lead. A cheap click that never converts is worse than an expensive one that books a job.
The number that actually runs a service business is cost per booked job. Work it out: clicks times CPC gives spend, spend divided by leads gives cost per lead, and cost per lead divided by your close rate gives cost per job. Compare that to the profit on an average job and you know whether to scale or stop. A roofer paying a high CPC on storm damage searches can be fine if one job covers a month of clicks, while a low CPC on vague research terms can lose money quietly.
