Agency, Freelancer, or In-House? How to Choose Who Does Your Marketing

August 3, 2026 • Heights Digital

Marketing has to get done by someone. Here's how the options compare for a small business, and the questions that reveal which one fits.

Freelancers

Best for: one specific skill (an editor, a designer, a copywriter). Risk: you become the project manager coordinating several people, and nobody owns the outcome. Content still has to be shot by someone.

In-house hire

Best for: larger businesses that need someone on site daily. Risk: one person can't cover video, editing, copy, web, ads and strategy; turnover stops everything; equipment and management costs add up.

Traditional agency

Best for: bigger budgets and brand-level work. Risk: retainers, account managers between you and the work, stock content, slow timelines, and contracts.

Done-for-you team

Best for: small businesses that want the whole job done — content shot on site, posted daily, website built and maintained, ads run, systems set up — by one accountable team, month-to-month. Risk: pick one that actually creates content and reports on leads, not just posts graphics.

Questions to ask anyone

  1. Who is physically shooting my content and how often?
  2. Who posts, replies and reports, and on what schedule?
  3. Who builds and updates my website, and how fast?
  4. How do you run ads and what do you report?
  5. What's the contract, and what happens if I leave?

If the answers involve you doing the shooting or waiting a week for a website change, keep looking. See how we do it.
