The Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses (2026 Edition)
Local SEO is the highest-return marketing most small businesses can do, and most do it halfway. Here's the full checklist we run for clients, in order of impact.
Google Business Profile (biggest lever)
- Claim and verify. Service-area businesses hide the address.
- Primary category exactly right; relevant secondary categories added.
- Every service and product listed with descriptions.
- Complete description, hours (including holidays), attributes, booking link.
- Photos: logo, cover, team, work, space. New photos weekly.
- Posts weekly. Q&A seeded and answered.
- Respond to every review within 48 hours.
Reviews
- A simple system to ask after every job (automated text works best).
- Steady velocity beats bursts. Aim for consistent monthly growth.
- Ask customers to mention the service and city naturally.
Website
- Fast, mobile-first, click-to-call.
- One page per service, one page per city/area served.
- Name, address (or service area), phone in the footer, matching GBP exactly.
- LocalBusiness and Service schema. Embedded map. Reviews displayed.
- Local content: seasonal posts, neighborhood guides, project spotlights.
Citations
- Consistent listings on the major directories and industry-specific ones.
- Duplicates found and removed.
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect claimed — both matter for AI assistants and iPhone users.
Links and mentions
- Chamber of commerce, local associations, sponsorships, suppliers, partners.
- Local press and community sites.
Technical
- Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools set up, sitemap submitted, errors fixed.
- Core Web Vitals passing on mobile.
Ongoing
Weekly GBP activity, monthly content, monthly citation and review checks, quarterly audits. This is exactly what our local SEO program and the $399/month website plan cover.
