How to Choose a Marketing Agency for Your Small Business: 15 Questions to Ask

September 25, 2026 • Heights Digital

Most bad agency experiences come from not asking the right questions up front. Ask these.

About the work

  1. Who actually does the work — your team or subcontractors?
  2. Do you create content (video and photos), or do I have to provide it?
  3. How many deliverables per month, specifically?
  4. Who builds and updates my website, and how fast?
  5. How do you run ads, and who makes the creative?

About results

  1. What do you report on, and how often?
  2. How do you track calls, forms and bookings?
  3. Can I talk to two current clients?
  4. What would you do in the first 90 days?
  5. What won't you do, and what should I not spend money on yet?

About terms

  1. Is there a contract? How do I cancel?
  2. Do I own my website, content, ad accounts and data?
  3. Do you mark up ad spend?
  4. Who's my point of contact, and how quickly do they respond?
  5. What's included, and what costs extra?

Red flags

Long contracts, owning your accounts, vague deliverables, guaranteed rankings, and no real examples.
