Page Speed and Core Web Vitals for Small Business Websites: What Matters and How to Fix It
Speed is a ranking factor, a conversion factor and a trust factor. A site that takes four seconds to load on a phone loses half its visitors before they see anything. Here's what matters and how to fix it without a computer science degree.
What Core Web Vitals measure
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content appears. Target under 2.5 seconds.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds to taps. Target under 200ms.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): whether things jump around while loading. Target under 0.1.
How to test
Google PageSpeed Insights (free), Search Console's Core Web Vitals report, and simply opening your site on a phone over cellular.
The fixes that matter most
- Images. The number one cause. Resize to display size, compress, use modern formats, lazy-load below the fold.
- Hosting. Cheap shared hosting is slow. Use a fast host or a CDN.
- Themes and plugins. Bloated page builders and dozens of plugins add seconds. Lean code wins.
- Fonts and scripts. Load only what you use; defer the rest.
- Embeds. Videos, maps and widgets should load on demand.
- Caching. Serve static versions of pages.
Why we build static-first
Our sites are lean, static-first and hosted on a global CDN, which is why they load in well under two seconds without maintenance headaches. Speed is built in, not bolted on. See small business websites.
