How Long Does It Take to Build a Small Business Website? (Realistic Timelines)

September 26, 2026 • Heights Digital

Owners get quoted everything from "this weekend" to "three months." Both can be true, depending on who's building it and how. Here's what's realistic.

Typical timelines

  • DIY builder: a weekend to set up, then months of tinkering, and it rarely gets finished properly.
  • Freelancer: 2–6 weeks, depending on their workload and how many revision rounds.
  • Traditional agency: 6–12 weeks with discovery meetings, wireframes, design rounds and development.
  • Focused small business build: about one week once content and photos are ready. That's our standard for the $750 build.

What actually slows websites down

  1. Waiting on content. Service descriptions, photos, logo and bios are the number one delay. A good builder writes the copy for you.
  2. Too many decision-makers. Keep approvals to one or two people.
  3. Scope creep. Launch the core site, add extras after.
  4. Domain and hosting access. Find your registrar login before you start.
  5. Photos. If you need them, schedule a shoot early.

How a one-week build works

Day 1: a 15-minute call and you send logo, photos and anything you have. Days 2–4: design and copy. Day 5: preview and one round of changes. Days 6–7: launch, analytics, Search Console, Bing and sitemap. Then monthly content and SEO keep it growing.
