Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete Guide for Small Businesses
Your Google Business Profile is the most valuable free marketing asset you own. It's what shows up on Maps, in the Map Pack, and increasingly in AI answers. Most profiles are half-finished and abandoned. Here's how to fully optimize yours and keep it ranking.
Categories
Your primary category is the single strongest ranking signal. Choose the most specific one that describes your core business. Add every relevant secondary category. Revisit annually — Google adds new ones.
Business name
Your real name only. Keyword stuffing ("Best Plumber San Antonio Plumbing Co.") gets suspended.
Service area or address
Storefronts show the address. Service-area businesses hide it and list the cities they serve (up to 20). Never use a home address publicly.
Services and products
List every service with a description that includes what it is, who it's for and where. Add products for packages and offers with photos.
Description
750 characters: what you do, where, for whom, since when, what's different. Natural keywords, no hype.
Photos and video
Logo, cover, exterior, interior, team, work, before/afters. Add new ones every week. Real photos, not stock. Short videos too.
Posts
Weekly at minimum: offers, updates, project spotlights, tips. Posts expire from view but activity is a ranking signal.
Q&A
Seed common questions and answer them. Monitor for public questions and answer fast.
Reviews
Ask after every job. Respond to every review, positive and negative, within 48 hours.
Attributes, hours, booking
Fill every applicable attribute, set holiday hours, connect a booking link and enable messaging if you'll respond quickly.
The weekly routine
New photos, a post, check Q&A, respond to reviews, verify nothing was edited by Google or users. Fifteen minutes a week — or let us do it as part of Google Business Profile management.
